During our Dog Days of Summer Picnic, our team member, Danielle, made treats to give out to the pups. And they were at hit! It is simple to make your own dog treats at home.

Thanks to Danielle, we have a step by step picture tutorial to share with you. Your dog is sure to love these homemade dog treat.

  • 1 ½ cup of hot water
  • 1 cup quick cooking oats
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ peanut butter
  • ¼ cup wheat germ
  • Dog shaped cookie cutters

 Simple Steps to Deliciousness

  • Pour the hot water over the oatmeal and let it cool until it is lukewarm

  • Stir in peanut butter and oil

  • Add the wheat germ

  • Add enough flour to make the dough stiff

  • Mix Well

  • Roll the dough on a floured cutting board until it’s about ⅜” thick

  • Bake for 3-3½ hours at 250 degrees, carefully flip them every hour until completely dry

  • If your cookies don’t get hard and are a little soft after baking make sure to refrigerate them to avoid spoilage

  • Let them cool and watch your dog do the happy dance

It is that simple! Homemade treats are extra special and your dog knows that. They are always in tune with what goes on in the kitchen. Once realize that what’s being made is actually for them, they will be over the moon happy.

An important thing to remember is moderation. While these dog treats are healthy, not all dogs have the same tolerance for our food. They can get tummy aches and loose stools if they eat too many treats at a time. As with any treats we make, it’s best to leave them for special times.
