Hopefully the April showers are now behind us. And with the weather getting warmer, it’s a perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. That’s the great part about living in Elk Grove. We have a beautiful place to call home and it is full of fun activities for everyone. It’s to put up the umbrella and pick up the picnic basket for some of these great ideas and events around town.

For the more introverted dog:
Not all dogs love big crowds, events or even car rides. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy plenty of sunshine either at home or a nearby park! Try these games for some fun in the sun with your Fido.
Predatory Chase
All you have to do is to tie a stuffed animal to the end of a rope or use a toy. Try something like the Chase-It by Kong to ignite their chase responses as they try and catch it. Clip a lightweight stuffed animal to the end of a retractable leash to lure them around the course. Get your dog even more pumped for the game by using an animal scent, such as raccoon or deer, that can be purchased at an outdoors store. (Read the label first to make sure it’s safe if ingested). This game reaches them on an instinctual level, which they are sure to love!
Agility Course
Be creative and make a simple obstacle course inside your home with the help of a few everyday objects like towels and boxes. Place one or two rolled-up blankets, a few boxes or low Walk your dog through the course and have him hop over the blankets and around the boxes a couple of times. Once he’s got the hang of it, ask him to stay at one end of the course and then call him from the other.
Red Light Green Light
This game is perfect for children and family dogs who know how to “stay” and “come.” All participants, both humans and dog, spread out in an open yard. One person is the game moderator. Instead of saying “red light” and “green light,” the keywords will be “stay” and “come.” The “Stop Light” will then call out the commands. And don’t forget to treat your dog after each command.
