Cat and Small-Pet Sitting in Elk Grove
Cats do better at home (and so do most small pets)
Here’s the thing… cats are wired to their space. They mark it with scent glands on their cheeks, paws, and flanks. When they rub their face on the couch and the doorframe and your leg, they are layering their own scent map. That map is how they feel safe. Take a cat out of that map and put them in a kennel that smells like other cats and cleaning solution… they stay stressed the whole stay. They stop eating. They get sick.
There’s another real risk pet parents don’t always hear about… upper respiratory infections (URI) spread fast in shared cat spaces, even at very clean facilities. A cat who was perfectly healthy on Monday can come home sneezing on Friday with a URI that takes two weeks to clear. We get the call after the fact… usually from a new client who is now committed to in-home care for the next trip.
The same goes for most small pets. Reptiles need their specific temperature gradient and lighting cycle. Rabbits need their own litter setup and the freedom to move. Birds need their own cage and the rhythms of their household.

In-home care lets them stay exactly where they thrive.
For general guidance on keeping cats healthy at home, the ASPCA’s Cat Care resource is a trusted reference.
For broader pet care guidance across species, the ASPCA Pet Care hub is a good starting point.
What our cat-care visits include
Fresh Food and Water
Litter Box Care
Medication Administration
If your cat is on thyroid meds, Sub-Q fluids, insulin, anything your vet prescribed… we give it on schedule, with the same technique your vet expects, and document the dose and your cat’s response.
Play Time
Five to ten minutes of wand toys, laser pointer (with a real prey-style end so we don’t frustrate your pet), or whatever your cat’s favorite is. We watch your cat’s body language and stop when they’re done, not when the timer is up.

Small Pets We Also Care For
- Reptiles (snakes, bearded dragons, geckos, turtles, tortoises). We check the temperature gradient on the warm and cool sides of the enclosure against your written target range, confirm the UVB and basking lights are on the right cycle, refresh the water bowl, mist the humidity-loving species if your routine calls for it, and check for any shed skin or behavioral changes.
- Rabbits. Hay refresh (rabbits need unlimited fresh hay), water bottle or bowl rinsed and refilled, litter box scooped, fresh pellets per your portion, leafy greens if your rabbit gets them, and brief out-of-pen time for play or stretching if you have authorized it in writing.
- Hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats. Fresh food, water bottle check (these often clog, we test the spout), spot-clean of the cage corners, and a quick visual check on activity level. For social species like rats, we offer a few minutes of interaction if your pet is used to it.
- Guinea pigs. Hay (the most important meal, we keep it stocked), pellets, fresh vegetables per your list (bell pepper, leafy greens, the rotation you've set up), water bottle test, run check around the hutch.
- Birds (parakeets, cockatiels, conures, larger parrots). Fresh water (rinse and refill, never just top off), fresh seed or pellet, fresh fruit and veg per your routine, cage paper change during longer trips, and we cover or uncover the cage on the schedule your bird is used to. Social time at the cage for parrots who are used to it.
- Fish. Feed to your written portion (overfeeding is the most common fish-killer), surface check for any swimmers showing signs of distress, basic monitoring of water clarity. We do not perform tank maintenance unless that's been pre-arranged.
Why Our Team is Qualified to Care for Cats and Small Pets

Three Reasons Matter Here, And They're All On Purpose.
First, our founder Karla Cano is a former Registered Veterinary Technician.
She built the training program for our entire Pet Care Team using clinic-level standards… how to medicate a cat, how to recognize when a rabbit is stressed, how to spot dehydration in a reptile. RVT training is real licensed coursework in animal anatomy, pharmacology, restraint, and emergency response. That foundation does not go away when someone leaves clinic work. It shapes every decision we make about how to hire and how to train.
When a new team member joins us, they don’t take their first solo cat-sit until they have shadowed experienced team members, completed our in-house training on species-specific care, and demonstrated they can identify what a healthy cat versus a stressed cat looks like in the first 30 seconds of a visit. We do not throw people into homes with keys and hope it works out.
Second, our team are W-2 employees, not gig contractors.
They’re background-checked, bonded, and covered by workers’ comp. They get ongoing training, supervision, and support. That means the person who comes to your door has been vetted and is accountable to a real company. If something goes wrong, there’s a chain of command, a supervisor, and me. The buck stops here… not with an algorithm in a different state.
Third, we’re a local Elk Grove company.
Our team can be on the ground in minutes if anything needs adjusted. There is no call center between you and us… when you message us through Time To Pet, you’re talking to our actual team. The same person who reads your message in the morning is the person making sure your cat’s evening visit happens. That continuity is the thing gig apps cannot replicate.
What Does Cat and Small-Pet Sitting in Elk Grove Cost?
We charge by time.
A standard 30-minute cat visit covers feeding, litter, and play.
Medication administration is added at our standard per-dose rate (insulin injections $5 each, Sub-Q fluid sessions $25) so you always know exactly what you’re paying for. Longer visits are available for multi-cat households, complex medication routines, or pets who need more time to settle.
Here’s a quick sense of how that plays out.
- A single-cat home with simple feeding and one medication is comfortably a 30-minute visit.
- A two-cat home with one cat on Sub-Q fluids and one on a prescription diet usually fits a 45-minute visit so we have time to handle both cats well without rushing.
- A bonded pair of senior cats with multiple medications, brushing, and meaningful play time is often a 60-minute visit.
We talk through your specific routine during your complimentary pre-sit visit so the visit length matches what your cat actually needs, not a generic slot.
Holiday surcharges apply during Thanksgiving week and December 18 through January 5 (+$5 per visit during those windows).
